Lake Natron

A caustic, deep-red soda lake in the Gregory Rift, in the shadow of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. Lake Natron is the exclusive breeding ground for East Africa's lesser flamingos, drawing hundreds of thousands of birds each year — nowhere else in the region do they breed. The main attraction is the lake itself: its otherworldly colors and mineral flats, and its status as the flamingos' only regional breeding site.
