Lake Duluti & West Kilimanjaro Bike Tour

Our newest adventure swaps the safari vehicle for a mountain bike. The West Kilimanjaro bike tour links two very different corners of northern Tanzania: the quiet, forest-ringed crater lake of Lake Duluti on the edge of Arusha, and the wide Maasai plains of West Kilimanjaro, where elephants cross beneath the snows of Kibo.

Lake Duluti

Lake Duluti is a small volcanic crater lake at the foot of Mount Meru, just east of Arusha. It is ringed by a protected forest reserve, and the trails around it are a favourite with birdwatchers: fish eagles, kingfishers, herons and cormorants hunt along the shore. From the lake, the ride heads out through the coffee and banana farms of the villages around Tengeru, with Mount Meru rising behind.

West Kilimanjaro

West Kilimanjaro is open, dry country on the far side of the mountain from the climbing gates, in the wildlife corridor that links Kilimanjaro with Amboseli. Riding here, you share the tracks with Maasai herders and, often, with elephant, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, while Kilimanjaro fills the horizon. It is the same country as our West Kilimanjaro Safari Tour, seen at the pace of a bicycle.
