The Momella Route is the one official route up Mount Meru. In three or four days it climbs from Momella Gate in Arusha National Park past two mountain huts to Socialist Peak (4,566 m), along the rim of a giant collapsed crater.
Mount Meru has a single official route, starting at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Because the lower slopes are home to buffalo, giraffe and elephant, every group is accompanied by an armed park ranger, and the first hours of the climb feel like a walking safari.
Two Huts on the Way Up
Accommodation is in two mountain huts with bunk rooms: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), set in a clearing on the crater floor with the cliffs of the summit towering above, and Saddle Hut (3,570 m), on the saddle between Meru and its smaller neighbour, Little Meru. Most climbers walk up Little Meru (3,820 m) on the afternoon they reach Saddle Hut, a short "walk high, sleep low" outing with a fine view of the summit ridge.
The Crater Rim
Summit day begins between one and two in the morning. The trail climbs to Rhino Point (3,800 m), then follows the narrow rim of Meru's horseshoe crater, with a sheer drop on one side to the Ash Cone far below. There are a few short scrambles where you use your hands. Sunrise comes as you approach Socialist Peak (4,566 m), with Kilimanjaro silhouetted about 70 km to the east.
Three Days or Four
The four-day climb spends a second night at Miriakamba on the way down and is the more comfortable pace. The three-day version descends all the way from the summit to the gate. Either way, Meru is a serious climb: summit day is long and the rim is exposed.
Why Choose This Route
- A walking safari on day one, with an armed park ranger
- Sunrise from the summit with Kilimanjaro on the horizon
- The crater rim above the Ash Cone
- Mountain huts with bunk beds: no tents needed
Good to Know
- Summit day is 12–14 hours, and the rim is narrow and exposed in places
- An armed ranger is required by the park on every climb
- Nights at Saddle Hut are cold, and summit morning is often below freezing
- At 4,566 m altitude sickness is possible: do not underestimate it

Day by Day
Momella Route Itinerary
Meet your park ranger at Momella Gate (1,500 m) and walk through open grassland and montane forest, often past giraffe and buffalo. The longer southern trail passes under the Fig Tree Arch and by Maio Falls before reaching Miriakamba Hut on the crater floor.
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
A steep climb on wooden steps through the forest to Saddle Hut. After lunch, walk up Little Meru (3,820 m), about an hour and a half return, for views of the summit and across to Kilimanjaro, then descend to sleep.
Overnight: Saddle Hut
Start between 1 and 2 am. Climb to Rhino Point, then follow the crater rim past Cobra Point to Socialist Peak for sunrise over Kilimanjaro. Return along the rim in daylight, with the Ash Cone below, rest at Saddle Hut and continue down to Miriakamba.
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Take the shorter, steeper trail down through the forest to Momella Gate, where you collect your certificate before the drive back to Arusha.

Momella Route: Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to climb Mount Meru? +
Three or four days. The four-day climb, with a second night at Miriakamba Hut on the way down, is the more comfortable pace.
Is Mount Meru harder than Kilimanjaro? +
It is lower, but the climbing is steeper and more exposed, especially along the crater rim on summit day. Many climbers find Meru the more demanding walk, even though the altitude is less extreme.
Why do you need an armed ranger on Mount Meru? +
The route starts inside Arusha National Park, where buffalo, elephant and other wildlife live on the lower slopes. A park ranger accompanies every group for safety.
Is Mount Meru good acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro? +
Yes. Reaching 4,566 m a few days before Kilimanjaro means your body is already adapting, which improves your chances on the higher mountain.
