Most safaris in northern Tanzania begin and end in Arusha, a lively town at the foot of Mount Meru and the headquarters of the East African Community. A half-day tour with a local guide is the best way to spend your arrival or departure day, and to see the Tanzania that lies beyond the parks.
On the tour
- The Clock Tower. The landmark at the heart of town, which local legend says stands halfway between Cairo and Cape Town.
- The central market. Stalls piled with bananas, spices, beans and fabric, where much of Arusha does its shopping.
- The Arusha Declaration Museum. The story of Tanzania from colonial times to independence, and of the 1967 Arusha Declaration of President Julius Nyerere.
- The Old German Boma. A fort built by the German colonial administration in 1900, now home to Arusha’s Natural History Museum.
- The Cultural Heritage Centre. A huge gallery of Tanzanian art, carvings, gemstones and crafts on the road out of town.
We adapt the tour to you: add a coffee stop, the Maasai craft market or a visit to a local school, or combine it with our Arusha bike ride.
