About the Lodge

Staying at Kambi ya Tembo

Kambi ya Tembo, "the elephant camp" in Swahili, is a classic tented camp in the Sinya area of Enduimet, in West Kilimanjaro, on the Kenyan border opposite Amboseli. It faces Mount Kilimanjaro, with Mount Meru, Longido and the Orok hills on the horizon, and it lies on the path of one of the largest elephant populations in the region, so herds are often seen walking past camp with the mountain behind them.

The camp was created together with the local Maasai, on land leased from the community. Its spacious safari tents each have an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda looking out to Kilimanjaro, and the camp runs on solar power. Meals are served in the open-sided dining area or by lantern light under the stars.

Days are spent on game drives in open-top vehicles among elephants, giraffes and gerenuk, on walking safaris with Maasai warriors, and on sundowners at viewpoints over the plains. Kambi ya Tembo is also an ideal base for a guided day hike on Kilimanjaro.
