Money & Tipping

Shillings and US dollars, cards, ATMs and gratuities on safari.

3 sections

Money in Tanzania is straightforward, and on most of your trip there is very little to pay for. Here is what to bring and how gratuities work.

1 Currency

  • The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted in the safari regions.
  • US dollar notes must be printed after 2009: older notes are not accepted.
  • Carry small denominations for gratuities and small purchases.

2 Cards and ATMs

  • Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at lodges.
  • ATMs are available in Arusha and Dar es Salaam, but not in the national parks.

3 Tipping on Safari

Many of our tours already include gratuities for drivers, guides, park rangers, Kilimanjaro crew, hotel porters and maid service, and your quote states clearly whether yours does. Where gratuities are not included, tipping is customary and appreciated for excellent service. As a guide:

  • Private safari guide: US$70–100 per guest per day.
  • Lodge staff: US$10–15 per guest per day, usually in a shared staff box.
  • Kilimanjaro crew: detailed guidance is provided before departure.

Gratuities are always at your discretion.
